Chapter Thirteen:

Trust Falls

Alexa stared into his dark eyes, the sudden spike of panic slowly abating. She didn’t know why, but she felt like she could trust him. This man who had somehow earned her daughter’s trust as well.

“I barely know you,” she whispered, feeling the rough strength of his hand holding hers.

He met her gaze. “You know me.”

She couldn’t look away, everything in her focusing on his eyes—until a creak down the hallway made her flinch, looking toward the sound, expecting to see Callie, but there was no one there. She pulled her hand away. “I don’t—I don’t talk about that stuff. Dare. My father. You must be some kind of hypnotist or something.”

He stepped back, smiling, letting her lighten the mood. “I have one of those faces. People love to confess things to me.”

Her eyebrows arched skeptically. “You do not have one of those faces.”

“Are you calling me ugly?”

Her gaze traced the lines of his face and her mouth went dry all over again. There was something about him so strong, so masculine. Even his bone structure made her feel safe. How crazy was that? It should have been unnerving—all that strength. He could break her with his pinky finger. But she only felt comforted by him. So incredibly safe.

“Do you do it on purpose?” she asked. “Do you consciously work at making yourself nonthreatening because you’re such a physical force?”

An easy smile curled his lips. “And if I do?”

“You’re very good at it.”

“Thank you.” She felt like there was subtext to the words, but she wasn’t sure what either of them were saying. “You’re a great actor too.”

She grimaced, wrinkling her nose. “I’m not.”

“Why did you do the movie if you didn’t want to be an actress?”

She shrugged. “Victor’s trying to turn me into a triple threat. Extend my career any way he can.”

“Is that what you want?”

The simple question caught her off guard and she opened her mouth, at a loss for words. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d thought about what she wanted. Only what she had to do. Always what she had to do. “I don’t know,” she admitted, after a long pause. “I want to avoid screwing things up with Callie. If that’s even possible.”

“You need to stop beating yourself up for the past and start thinking about what you can do in the future.”

“Like it’s that easy?”

He shrugged. “It’s a start. No one gets a handbook when they have a kid. You just have to figure it out. Fake it till you make it.”

“But if I screw up—”

“Then you screw up. And she knows you tried.”

“I don’t even know where to start.”

He grinned. “How about with White Christmas and pizza?”

“Elia…” It wasn’t as easy as that. You didn’t just decide to be a good mother and poof all problems were solved, all the baggage gone, all the history erased.

“Trust me,” he murmured, and he grinned, making everything easy with a curve of his lips—just like he always did—and Alexa nodded. There wasn’t anything else she could do.
